Energy Crisis: What is the criteria that defines this term
"energy crisis"? When there is an ever increasing demand for energy that exceeds the supply of it?
We have always understood that the energy we use is not unlimited, yet we take it for granted.
Oil, gas, power, even water is not in an unlimited supply. Yet, we have not taken any precautions
to deal with a possible energy crisis. By ‘we’, I am not referring to governments but to all of us,
everyone.
Oil and gas have become too expensive, and with every passing day,
supplies are becoming more and more limited. There are some that beleive the energy crisis is a myth
or conspiracy. They fail to recognize that supplies are dwendling. There have been three major energy
crises so far since the 1970's – the 1973 oil crisis, the 1979 energy crisis, and the 1990 oil-price
hike, apart from other regional crisis.
Prices have been rapidly increasing during the last five years, thanks
to increasing demand and the decreasing supply of energy resources. How soon will it all be gone?
Are the cynics correct in saying that we are making a mountain of a molehill, or is the energy crisis
for real? Know this: We have already exhausted 50 percent of the available oil. At the current
rate of usage, the rest of the oil will vanish in 32 years! Imagine if the rate of usage increases.
We know it is bound to increase. So, even the present generation will face an energy crisis in the
coming years, let alone future generations.
What is being done about it? Are we equipped to face an energy crisis?
What should we do to tackle it? For starters, we need to understand the importance of energy in our
lives and stop acting like there is a never ending supply. We need to regulate the use of oil, gas,
electricity, and other fuel's. We cannot afford to waste available energy. It is also necessary to
spread awareness about limited supplies of energy resources. Simple things like joining a car pool,
switching off your car engine at a traffic light, and minimizing the use of gas and oil in everyday
activities goes a long way in conserving resources.
What are some other options for energy? As a responsible citizen,
start looking at alternate energy solutions like solar energy and wind energy. Employing these alternate
power solutions is feasible and cost-effective. It will not only cut down on power bills but also
contribute to a better future of the world.
